Jazz
Jazz is a beautiful year-old hen. She loves to learn new things and is very curious. She loves seeds, her 'mommy' (me), and challenges. Currently, she is looking for some budgie friends, but I'm not ready to break down and get her a full-time mate yet. I started clicker-training Jazz about a month ago. She's picked up really quickly on the concept of hear the click=get the treat. It didn't take her very long to get the concept of "grab the shiny thing" (targeting), and she's now moving on to the retrieve. She's learning it in tiny baby steps: first, touch it, then pick it up, then move it, then bring it, and so on. She can distinguish between the command "grab it" and the command "pick it up", and she just started learning "move it". She practices with a ball that's as big as she is! It's still really cute. Her favorite reward is millet spray, although anything to do with seeds is just fine by her!
Care and Feeding
Jazz (whose real name is actually Jasmine, but since I thought she was a he for so long, I call her Jazz) eats Pretty Bird Daily Select Small. She is picky about pellet size, so I am trying to break her of that, but she eats crushed or powdered pellets well. I'm actually convinced she likes it.
She showers with me. I have tried every other method in the book, but she won't have it! She's very good and waits on the (clean) ledge while I do my business, then I let her hop on to my finger and she has her turn! It's extremely cute.
Her newspapers under the cage are changed first thing every morning, perches scraped daily, and every Saturday her cage is cleaned and disinfected with a solution of apple cider vinegar and water. It's not toxic to the bird and is really inexpensive, plus it takes out a lot of droppings when left to sit five minutes. The solution is half apple cider vinegar, half water, and be sure to rinse with clean water when you're done.
She gets reign of the floor in my room (after I have removed all harmful stuff from the floor) at least once a day. Her toys are changed every Saturday.
